Procedure
4-Mercaptophenol (126 grams) was dissolved in 60 millimeters of ethanol. A solution of KOH (58 grams) dissolved in ethanol (150 millimeters) was added under a nitrogen blanket. 2-Chloroethanol (83 grams) was then added slowly and the combination allowed to react for 11/2 hours. The product was filtered and the volatiles stripped off. The weight of product was 172 grams.
