Procedure
17.7 g. of the tert-butyl ester of N-hydroxyalanine which was prepared from tert-butyl bromopropionate by the method of Newman et al. [J. Amer. Chem. Soc. 77, 2308 (1971)] was added to 40 ml. of acetic anhydride and the mixture was stirred for 30° minutes at 100° C. The reaction mixture was evaporated to dryness under reduced pressure to give the oily tert-butyl ester of N-acetyl-N-acetoxyalanine.
