Procedure

300 mg. of tert-butyl 2-methoxy-2-acetamido-3,3-dibromopropionate was added to 5 ml. of methanol saturated with hydrogen bromide. The mixture was stirred for 70 minutes at 60° C. and then evaporated to dryness under reduced pressure. The residue was treated with benzene to give crystalline 2-methoxy-2-acetamido-3,3-dibromopropionic acid having a m.p. of 143°-144° C.
