To a solution of 4-(4-hydroxy-2-methylbutan-2-ylthio)-3-nitrobenzoic acid (3.08 g, 10.8 mmol) in DCE (50 mL) was added thionyl chloride (2.365 mL, 32.4 mmol). The reaction was heated to 70° C. and stirred at that temperature for 1 hour. The solvent was removed under reduced pressure and the resulting oil was used without further purification.
