To a solution of 4-amino-2,6-dichlorophenol (Aldrich, 5.9 g, 33 mmol) in 30 mL of THF was added 2-chloro-4-trifluoromethylbenzenesulfonyl chloride (4.19 g, 15 mmol). The mixture was stirred overnight. The reaction mixture was filtered and washed with EtOAc. The filtrate was washed with 2N HCl, twice with a brine solution, dried over Na2SO4 and concentrated. The residue was purified by chromatography (20%-25% EtOAc/hexanes) to give 5.7 g (90%) of product. 1H NMR (400 MHz, DMSO-d6) δ 10.89 (s, 1H), 10.15 (s, 10H), 8.19 (d, J=8.3 Hz, 1H), 8.16 (d, J=1.1 Hz, 1H), 7.92 (dd, J=8.3, 2.2 Hz, 1H), 7.06 (s, 2H). MS (EI): m/z 418 (M+H).
