2-(4-Octylbenzyl)cyclopentanone (5) 3.20 g (11.8 mmol), sodium cyanide 1.15 g (23.5 mmol) and ammonium chloride 1.25 g (23.5 mmol) were added to 20 mL of ammonium hydroxide. The mixture was stirred vigorously for 12 hours at room temperature, then poured into a separating funnel and extracted twice with 10 mL of methylene chloride. The organic layers were combined, dried and then concentrated to give a crude yellow oil (3.30 g, ˜100%). The crude product is used for next step without further purification. (See: J. Med.
