Procedure
A mixture of 3-(5-fluoro-2-nitrophenylamino)cyclobutanecarbonitrile (0.38 g, 1.61 mmol), iron powder (0.36 g, 6.44 mmol) and ammonium chloride (0.50 g, 9.66 mmol) in methanol (10 mL) and water (4 mL) was stirred at 90° C. for 2 hours. After cooling the solid material was filtered off and the solution was concentrated in vacuo. The residue was partitioned between ethyl acetate (3×) and water, then the combined organic layers were washed with brine, dried (Na2SO4) and concentrated in vacuo to give the title compound as a dark green gum (0.26 g, 79%). LCMS (Method B): RT 1.75 min [M+H]+ 206.0
