Procedure
To a solution of ethyl 2-(4-piperidinylmethyl)-1,3-thiazole-4-carboxylate (19 g, 74 mmol) was added a solution of sodium hydroxide (3.6 g, 88.8 mmol) in water (250 ml). The resulting mixture was stirred at room temperature for 18 h, then ethyl acetate was added and the layers were separated. The aqueous phase was acidified with conc. H2SO4 and concentrated to give a brown solid. The solid was recrystallised from methanol/ethyl acetate, then again from DCM/methanol to give the title compound as a light brown solid (16 g).
