A glass Parr vessel was charged with 5% platinum on carbon catalyst (5 g), 1-(7-bromo-3-nitroquinolin-4-ylamino)-2-methylpropan-2-ol (57 g, 0.17 mol), and a 1:1 solution of acetonitrile/toluene (1800 mL). The vessel was evacuated, charged with hydrogen gas (50 psi, 3.4×105 Pa), and shaken for 5 hours. The reaction mixture was then filtered through a 0.2 micron polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) membrane filter. The filtrate was concentrated to provide 49 g of 1-[(3-amino-7-bromoquinolin-4-yl)amino]-2-methylpropan-2-ol as a bright yellow-orange solid.
