(S)-3-formylpyrrolidine-1 -carboxylic acid t-butyl ester (3.0 g, 15.0 mmol, 1.0 eq.) in THF (10 mL) was slowly added and the mixture was stirred at −78° C. for 2 hours. The mixture was warmed to room temperature over 3 hours and the reaction was quenched with half saturated NH4Cl (50mL). The organic layer was washed with saturated aqueous NaCl (50 mL). The organic layer was collected, dried over MgSO4, filtered, and concentrated. The resulting oil was slurried in hexanes (50 mL) and the precipitate was filtered off The filtrate was concentrated, diluted with hexanes (25 mL), and chilled at −20° C. overnight. The precipitate was filtered off and the filtrate was purified by column chromatography (0-100% EtOAc in hexanes) to yield (R)-3-vinylpyrrolidine-1-carboxylic acid t-butyl ester as an oil (2.1 g).
