Procedure

219 g of 2,4-dimethyl-4-phenyl-butan-1-ol are added dropwise to 161 g of thionyl chloride, the mixture is stirred overnight at room temperature and then for 2 hours at 140° C., and the crude product is distilled to give 150 g of 2,4-dimethyl-4-phenylbutyl chloride of boiling point 84°-86° C./0.1 mm.
