Procedure

The nitrile (1.1 g) in tetrahydrofuran (20 ml) was added to lithium aluminium hydride (0.5 g) in tetrahydrofuran (30 ml) and the mixture stirred for three hours. Water (0.5 ml) sodium hydroxide solution (10%) (0.75 ml) and water (1.25 ml) were added successively and the mixture filtered. The filtrate was dried (K2CO3) and evaporated to give crude (D31) (1 g) as an oil.
