3.293 g (10 mmol) of the ester prepared in (a) is dissolved in 50 ml of dioxane and combined with 10 ml (20 mmol) of 2N sodium hydroxide solution. The mixture is stirred at 50° C. until no starting material can be detected any longer. The solution is set to a pH of 4 with hydrochloric acid and concentrated to dryness under vacuum. The residue is distributed between dichloromethane and acidified water. The organic solution is washed with water, dried over sodium sulfate, and concentrated to dryness under vacuum, thus obtaining 2.572 g (81.6% of theory) of the title compound.
