2-(2-Chloro-4,5-difluorobenzoyl)-3-(4-fluoroanilino)-2-propenoic acid ethyl ester (11.0 g, 28.7 mmol) was dissolved in dimethoxyethane (200 ml) and cooled to 0°. Sodium hydride (1.65 g of a 50% suspension in mineral oil, 34.5 mmol) was added portionwise, and the mixture was heated to reflux for 3 hours. The reaction mixture was then poured into water (2 l) and the title product was collected by filtration (8.96 g, 25.8 mmol, 90% yield).
