Procedure

Carbamate 4 (0.74 g, 1.97 mmol) was dissolved in dichloromethane (12 cm3) under nitrogen and cooled to 0° C. Trifluoroacetic acid (6 cm3) was added dropwise over a period of 5 min and the solution stirred for 1.5 h. The solution was evaporated under reduced pressure to give an orange gum, that was dissolved in toluene and evaporated under reduced pressure (2×10 cm3) to give crude acid 5 as an orange gum. The material was used without further purification.
