3-[4-(3-Hydroxy-2,2-dimethoxypropoxymethyl)benzylidene]-4,7,7-trimethylbicyclo[2.2.1]heptan-2-one from Example 8 (2 mmol) is dissolved in the H2O/3N HCl 2:3 mixture (10 ml) and stirred at room temperature for 2 h. A solution of sodium hydrogencarbonate in water is then added dropwise to the reaction mixture with stirring (to about pH=8), and the reaction mixture is extracted with dichloromethane (3×10 ml). The combined organic extracts are dried over magnesium sulfate. The solvent is removed in vacuo, and the residue is purified by column chromatography using (ethyl acetate:cyclohexane—1:1).
