To an agitated solution of 3,4-dimethylbiphenyl-3-carbaldehyde (0.019 g, 0.09 mmol) in EtOH (0.80 mL) was added 7,8-Diamino-1-hydroxy-3-naphthoic acid dihydrochloride (0.024 g, 0.08 mmol) and sodium bisulfite (0.02 g) in water (0.20 mL). The solution was heated to 60° C. and agitated overnight. The solution was cooled to room temperature and concentrated under reduced pressure. The tan residue was subjected to HPLC (ODS-A, gradient 10-90% CH3CN/water 0.1% TFA) to provide the title compound (0.015 g, 33%) MS(ES) m/z 409 [M+H].
