440 mg (2.78 mmol) of 3-dimethylaminopropyl chloride hydrochloride and 970 mg (7 mmol) of potassium carbonate are added to a solution of 1 g (2.33 mmol) of ethyl 4′-hydroxy-3′-(5,5,8,8-tetramethyl-5,6,7,8-tetrahydronaphth-2-yl)biphenyl-4-carboxylate in 50 ml of acetone. The reaction mixture is stirred for 48 hours at reflux. The reaction is stopped by adding water, and is then extracted with ethyl acetate. The organic phases are combined and dried over sodium sulfate. The solvents are evaporated off and the residue is then purified by chromatography on silica gel (eluent: 90/10 ethyl acetate/methanol). 980 mg of ethyl 4′-(3-dimethylaminopropoxy)-3′-(5,5,8,8-tetramethyl-5,6,7,8-tetrahydronaphth-2-yl)biphenyl-4-carboxylate are obtained in the form of a yellow oil (yield=82%).
