Triethylene glycol monomethyl ether (4.27 g, 0.026 mol) and But-3-enoic acid ethyl ester (1.5 g, 0.013 mol) were dissolved in tetrahydrofuran (10 mL). Then lump Na0 (0.030 g, 0.013 mol) was added and the reaction was stirred for 4 h. Crude reaction was quenched with 1M HCl (20 mL), washed ethyl acetate (3×20 mL). Organic layers were combined and washed with H2O (2×10 mL), dried MgSO4, and evaporated to dryness to afford 2 a yellowish oil (1.07 g, 30% yield).
