Procedure

A mixture of 3,3-dimethylbutanal (3.0 mL, 24 mmol), 3-methylbutan-1-amine (2.5 mL, 22 mmol), 4 Å molecular sieves (3 g, 8-12 mesh beads), potassium thiocyanate (2.8 g, 29 mmol) and iodine (11 g, 44 mmol) in acetonitrile (40 mL) were processed as described in Example 18A to provide the title compound (4.9 g, 23 mol, 99% yield). MS (DCI/NH3) m/z 227 (M+H)+.
