Procedure

A solution of 10.0 g of ethyl 6-ethyl-7-methoxy-5-methylimidazo[1,2-a]pyrimidine-2-carboxylate (published UK Patent Application No. 2,128,989) and 20 ml of hydrazine hydrate in 150 ml of ethanol was refluxed for 4 hours. Most of the ethanol was evaporated and 100 ml of water were added. The resulting precipitate was filtered, washed with water, then ether and dried under vacuum over P2O5 to obtain 8.15 g of 6-ethyl-7-methoxy-5-methylimidazo[1,2-a]pyrimidine-2-carbohydrazide (86% yield) as an off-white solid.
