1-(2-hydroxyethyl)-2-methylthio-3,4,5,6-tetrahydropyrimidine mesylate (87.2 g) is suspended in ethyl alcohol (150 ml) and treated with anhydrous hydrazine (22 mL). The mixture becomes clear within a few minutes. It is stirred at room temperature overnight and then diluted with t-butyl methyl ether (2 liters). The solution is kept in the freezer at -20° C. until the solid separates, filters and dries. Recrystallization from isopropyl alcohol and t-butyl methyl ether gives 68.12 g of 1-(2-hydroxyethyl)- 2-hydrazino-3,4,5,6-tetrahydropyrimidine mesylate, melting point 82.2°-84.4° C.
