Procedure

To a solution of potassium tert-butoxide (1.34 g, 12 mmol) in DMF (30 ml) was added dropwise a solution of methyl (5-methylpyrrol-2-yl)oxoacetate (2.0 g, 12 mmol) in DMF (5 ml). The reaction mixture was stirred for 2 hours, cooled to 0° C., and then treated dropwise with a solution of benzyl chloride (1.4 ml, 12 mmol) in DMF (5 ml). The mixture was stirred for 6 hours, poured into water (150 ml) and then extracted with ether (2×100 ml). The organic layers were washed with brine (2×50 ml), dried and then evaporated under reduced pressure to give an orange oil. Chromatography (eluent diethyl ether-hexane 1:1) gave methyl (1-benzyl-5-methylpyrrol-2-yl)oxoacetate (2.0 g) as a yellow oil, 1H nmr: delta 2.22 (3H,s), 3.87 (3H,s), 5.65 (2H,s), 6.1 (1H,d), 7.9 (2H,d), 7.2-7.4 (4H,m) ppm.
