Procedure
A mixture of 58 parts of methyl 4-(acetylamino)-2,3-dihydro-2,2-dimethyl-7-benzofurancarboxylate, 123 parts of potassium hydroxide and 1100 parts of water was stirred for 3 hours at reflux temperature. After cooling, the reaction mixture was acidified to pH 1 with HCl. The precipitate was filtered off and dried in vacuo at 80° C., yielding 36 parts (79.0%) of 4-amino-2,3-dihydro-2,2-dimethyl-7-benzofurancarboxylic acid (interm. 6).
