Procedure

A solution of the indole 29 (29 g, 86 mmol), CH2Cl2 (450 mL), 1,8-diazobicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene (38 mL, 0.26 mol), 4-dimethylaminopyridine (1.0 g, 8.5 mmol), and acetic anhydride (32 mL, 0.34 mol) was stirred for 1 week at ambient temperature. The reaction mixture was concentrated and then diluted with ether. The ether was then washed with H2O, 5% KHSO4 and brine, dried (MgSO4), and concentrated. Flash chromatography (silica, 5% ethyl acetate/hexanes) gave the acylated product 30 (27 g) as a yellow oil. TLC Rf=0.56 (20% ethyl acetate/hexanes).
