Reaction Steps
A solution of 1.88 g (0.01 mol) of 2-carbethoxymethyl-1,3,4-oxadiazol-5-thiol in 25 ml of absolute ethanol is added dropwise at ambient temperature to 100 ml of a saturated solution of anhydrous ammonia in absolute ethanol. When the reaction is complete, as evidenced by thin layer chromatography, the solution is evaporated to dryness. The residue is dissolved in 100 ml of water and the aqueous solution is acidified to pH 2.5 with dilute hydrochloric acid and extracted with ethyl acetate. The extract is dried (MgSO4) and evaporated to dryness to give 2-carbamoylmethyl-1,3,4-oxadiazole-5-thiol.
