Procedure
A mixture of 17.7 parts of (-)-1-(1-phenylethyl)-1H-imidazole-5-carboxylic acid, 3.28 parts of sodium hydroxide and 120 parts of 2-propanol is stirred and refluxed until the reaction mixture becomes homogenous and thereafter for 1 further hour. During reflux part of the product crystallizes out. The reaction mixture is allowed to cool to room temperature and the precipitated product is filtered off. The product is washed with 2-propanol and dried in vacuo, yielding (-)-1-(1-phenylethyl)-1H-imidazole-5-carboxylic acid sodium salt.
