To a solution of α-(2-benzoyloxy-5-sulfonylphenylazo)-β-benzoyloxycinnamonitrile (10 g) in 50 ml of thionyl chloride was added 3 ml of dimethylformamide. The reaction mixture was allowed to stir at room temperature for 31/2 hours. The solvent was evaporated to dryness under vacuum at room temperature. The residue was diluted with ethyl ether (50 ml) to form a white precipitate. The product was filtered off and dried to yield 9.4 g, m.p. 153° to 155° C.
