A solution of 1.43 g. of p-nitrobenzyl 6β-formamido-2,2-dimethylpenam-3-carboxylate-1-oxide and 500 mg. of N-chlorosuccinimide in 40 ml. of dry 1,1,2-trichlorethane was refluxed for 90 minutes. The mixture was cooled, washed with water and brine, dried over MgSO4, and the solvent was evaporated. The nmr spectrum indicates conversion to the title compound.
