To a 0° C. solution of trans-4-aminomethyl-1-cyclohexane carboxylic acid (6.28 g, 0.04 mol) in 10% aqueous NaOH (16 mL) was added dropwise benzyl chloroformate (8.29 g, 0.049 mol) and 10% aqueous NaOH (20 mL). The cold bath was removed and the reaction mixture was stirred vigorously for one hour. The thick white paste was shaken with aqueous 1M HCl (100 mL) and the white solid was isolated by filtration, washed with H2O, and dried overnight in vacuo to give trans-4-(N-carbobenzyloxy)aminomethyl-1-cyclohexane carboxylic acid.
