6.4 g of 2-benzyl 3-tert-butyl (2S,3S)-5-oxotetrahydrofuran-2,3-dicarboxylate was dissolved in 80 ml of ethyl acetate, and 640 mg of a 10% palladium-carbon catalyst was added thereto, followed by catalytic reduction for 3 hours at room temperature under hydrogen atmospheric pressure. The catalyst was filtered off, and the filtrate was evaporated to dryness under reduced pressure to obtain 4.39 g of the above-identified compound as white solid.
