N-Methyl-4a-phenyl-1,3-diketo-trans-decahydroisoquinoline (2.0 g) in 100 ml of methanol was treated with 400 mg of sodium methoxide and the mixture was refluxed for 30 minutes. It was allowed to stand overnight at 25°, then poured into 1 N hydrochloric acid and extracted with ether. The ether extracts were washed successively with water and brine, then dried (MgSO4) and the ether evaporated to yield 1.9 g of an oil. NMR (CDCl3): methylene envelope from 70 to 140 cps (8H); singlet at 177 cps (3H); multiplet at 145 to 205 cps (3H); singlet at 434 cps (5H).
