A mixture of 0.93 g of 2,2-bisfluoromethyl-6-nitro-2H-1-benzopyran-4-carbonitrile, 20 ml of acetic acid, 10 ml of water and 10 ml of sulfuric acid was heated while refluxing for 4.5 hours. The reaction mixture was poured into ice-water, and the precipitated crystals were separated by filtration to obtain 0.83 g of 2,2-bisfluoromethyl-6-nitro-2H-1-benzopyran-4-carboxylic acid having a melting point of 171°-172° C.
