1.00 g of ethyl 2-ethylthio-4-(1-hydroxy-1-methylethyl)-1-{4-[2-(tetrazol-5-yl)phenyl]phenyl}methylimidazole-5-carboxylate [prepared as described in Example 107(b)] and 256 mg of lithium hydroxide monohydrate were added to a mixture of 10 ml of water and 10 ml of dioxane. The mixture was then stirred at room temperature for 24 hours after which it was concentrated by evaporation under reduced pressure. The resulting residue was dissolved in water, and then 6.1 ml of 1N aqueous hydrochloric acid were added. The oily matter which appeared was extracted with ethyl acetate. The extract was washed with a saturated aqueous solution of sodium chloride, dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate and concentrated by evaporation under reduced pressure, to give 955 mg of the title compound as an amorphous powder.
