A solution of 1.80 g of diethyl 1-benzyl-2-bromomethylimidazole-4,5-dicarboxylate [prepared as described in Preparation42(ii)] in 50 ml of ethanol was added dropwise to a solution of sodium ethoxide in ethanol (prepared from 0.18 g of sodium and 50 ml of ethanol), and the resulting mixture was left at room temperature for 13 hours. At the end of this time, a procedure similar to that described in Preparation 42(iii) was repeated, and the residue was purified by column chromatography through silica gel, using a 1:1 by volume mixture of hexane and ethyl acetate as the eluent, to give 1.14 g of the title compound as a syrup.
