Procedure
Homopiperazine (10 g; 100 mmol) was dissolved in chloroform (150 mL) and triethylamine (28 mL; 500 mmol) was added to the mixture. The solution was cooled to -30° C. under nitrogen and chloroacetyl chloride (17 mL, 213 mmol) was added over a period of 1 hour. The solution was stirred at -30° C. for 1 hour, at 0° C. for 2 hour and at ambient temperature overnight. The solution was washed with water (4×50 mL), dried over anhydrous MgSO4, filtered and concentrated. The oily residue was purified by column chromatography on silica gel (5% methanol in chloroform) to yield the title product as an oil which solidified on prolonged standing (10.3 g; 41%). 1H NMR (CDCl3): 4.04 (m, 4 H), 3.62 (m, 8 H), and 1.94 (m, 2H).
