A mixture of 2-benzyl-4-ethoxy-7-hydroxysaccharin (1.0 g), allyl bromide (0.36 g), potassium carbonate (0.62 g) and methyl ethyl ketone (about 20 mL) was heated at 80° C. for one hour. More allyl bromide (0.36 g) was added and heating at 80° C. was continued for one and one-half hours. The mixture was cooled and poured into ice-water (500 mL). The solid was collected affording 2-benzyl-4-ethoxy-7-allyloxysaccharin, 1.08 g, 96% yield, mp 148°-149° C.
