Reaction Steps
By the method of Example 21 phenylthiomethylation of 4-ethyl-5,7-dimethoxy-6-methylsaccharin (0.65 g) with chloromethyl phenyl sulfide (0.24 mL) gave 2-phenylthiomethyl-4-ethyl-5,7-dimethoxy-6-methylsaccharin, reaction of which with sulfuryl chloride gave 2-chloromethyl-4-ethyl-5,7-dimethoxy-6-methylsaccharin, 0.16 g, 22% yield.
