Procedure
4-Bromo-2,5-diisopropylphenyl methyl sulfone was prepared as follows. A 55-g portion of 30% hydrogen peroxide was added to a solution of 28.7 g of 4-bromo-2,5-diisopropylphenyl methyl sulfide (prepared in Example 1C) in 100 ml of acetic acid over a period of 25 min. while maintaining the temperature at 50°-60°C. The reaction mixture was then refluxed at 90°C for 4 hrs., after which time it was poured into cold water. The product was filtered and washed with water to give 23.1 g of 4-bromo-2,5-diisopropylphenyl methyl sulfone. After recrystallization from 75% ethanol water the 4-bromo-2,5-diisopropylphenyl methyl sulfone melted at 107°-112°C.
