To a solution of 6-chloro-2,3-dihydro-s-triazolo[4,3-b]pyridazin-3-on [P. Francabilla and F. Lauria, J. Het. Chem. 8, 415 (1971)] (17 g., 0.1 mole) in dry DMF (300 ml.) was added potassium tert.-butoxide (0.5 g., 4.5 m.moles) with stirring. Acrylonitrile (6.6 g., 0.12 mole) in dry DMF (10 ml.) was added to the mixture. The mixture was stirred at 100°-110° C. for 24 hours, then poured into water (700 ml.) and extracted with ethyl acetate (5×400 ml.). The organic extracts were combined, dried over Na2SO4 and evaporated. The residue was crystallized from ethyl acetate to give light yellow needles of 6-chloro-2-(2-cyanoethyl)-2,3-dihydro-s-triazolo[4,3-b]pyridazin-3-on (2.5 g., 11%). M.p. 166°-168° C.
