A mixture of methyl 2-(6-methoxybenzofuran-3-yl)acetate (0.500 g, 2.27 mmol) and SeO2 (0.303 g, 2.73 mmol) in 1,4-dioxane (10 mL) was refluxed for 2 days and then filtered. The filtrate was concentrated in vacuo and the residue was purified on a silica gel column to give methyl 2-(6-methoxybenzofuran-3-yl)-2-oxoacetate (0.452 g, 85%)
