A solution of estra-1,3,5( 10),6,8,16-hexaen-3-ol Q8, 148.8 mg, 0.5944 mmol) in anh. pyridine (2.0 mL, 25 mmol) and acetic anhydride (0.28 mL, 3.0 mmol) was stirred 6 h, after which ethyl acetate (20 mL) was added. See FIG. 16. The mixture was washed with three 10 mL portions of 1 N hydrochloric acid+10 mL of saturated sodium bicarbonate+10 mL of brine, dried over sodium sulfate, and filtered. The residue was washed with 5 mL of ethyl acetate and the combined filtrates were concentrated under reduced pressure. Recrystallization from 95% ethanol gave lustrous white platelets (99.4 mg, 0.340 mmol, 55%, m.p. 95-96° C. TLC (2% ethyl acetate/hazanes on silica gel) showed product (Rf 0.1) contained a trace contaminant at the origin.
