Procedure
Reflux a mixture of 2-methyl-4-hydroxy-8-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)pyrido[2,3-c]pyridazine (3) (3.0 g, 10 mmol) in phosphorous oxychloride (10 mL) for 2 hrs. Cool the reaction mixture, pour onto cracked ice and neutralize the solution with 1N NaOH. Extract the solution with ethyl acetate (2×100 mL) and wash the combined organic layers with brine. Dry the solution (Na2SO4) and evaporate in vacuo to obtain 4.
