Procedure
1.0 ml of 10% aqueous hydrogen chloride was added at room temperature to 5 ml solution of 294 mg 3-methoxymethyl-2-methoxymethoxymethyl-5,6,7,8-tetrahydro-5,5,8,8-tetramethylnaphthalene in methanol. After the mixture was heated under reflux for 1 hour, methanol was distilled off. Ethyl acetate was added to the residue, and the resulting mixture was washed with brine. The organic layer was dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate, and then the residue obtained under reduced pressure was subjected to silica gel column chromatography to give 290 mg of the title compound as a yellow oil.
