Ethyl 3-amino-4,4,4-trifluorocrotonate (6.1 g, 33.1 mmol) was dissolved in dimethylformamide (47 ml) and stirred at −10 ° C. To this solution was slowly added 1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene (6.3 g, 41.4 mmol) and solution stirred for 0.5 hr. To this solution was slowly added a solution of 4-chloro-2-fluoro-5-methyl-6-nitro-N-phenoxycarbonylaniline (8.5 g) in dimethylformamide (25 ml) followed by stirring at ambient temperature for 14 hr. Product was extracted with ethyl acetate followed by evaporation of the solvent to afford the crude product (10.1 g) which was subjected to N-methylation as follows.
