To a stirred solution of 6-benzyloxy-7-methoxy-2-methyl-4-oxo-3,4-dihydro-2H-quinoline-1-carboxylic acid ethyl ester (1.99 g, 5.39 mmol) in 95% ethanol (20 mL) was added hydroxylamine hydrochloride (1.1 g, 16 mmol) and sodium acetate (1.1 g, 14 mmol), and the mixture was heated at reflux. After 2 h, water (50 mL) was added, and the mixture was extracted with ethyl acetate (3×50 mL). The combined organic phases were washed with brine (30 mL), dried over sodium sulfate, filtered and concentrated in vacuo to give 2.05 g of the title compound (99%).
