Procedure
1.826 g (0.013 mol) of 2-hydroxymethyl-4- acetylimidazole was dissolved in 40 ml of 48% hydrobromic acid and 2.1 g (0.013 mol) of bromine was added. The reaction was warmed at 80° for 2 hours and then concentrated in vacuo to a solid. This material was triturated with isopropylether and the resultant solid was collected by filtration and was washed with ether and dried to give 2.2 g (56%) of 2-hydroxymethyl-4-bromoacetylimidazole hydrobromide, mp 183° with decomposition. nmr (DMSO-d6) (δ): 8.8 (s, 1H); 4.8 (s, 2×2H).
