To 213 mg of 4-cyano-3-methyl-benzofuran-2-carboxylic acid ethyl ester (Example 20, Step 2) in 6 mL of ethanol and 6 mL of DMSO was added 3 mL of Na2CO3 (3M), followed by 3 mL of H2O2 (30% in water). After 24 h of reaction, the mixture was worked up to give 4-carbamoyl-3-methyl-benzofuran-2-carboxylic acid ethyl ester in quantitative yield. 1H NMR (400 MHz, DMSO-d6) δ ppm 1.4 (t, J=7.1 Hz, 3 H) 2.6 (s, 3 H) 4.4 (q, J=7.1 Hz, 2 H) 7.4 (dd, J=7.3, 1.0 Hz, 1 H) 7.5 (dd, J=8.3, 7.3 Hz, 1 H) 7.7 (s, 1 H) 7.8 (m, 1 H) 8.0 (s, 1 H).
