According to the procedure of (Example 100, Step 1), 0.21 g of ethyl 4-(1-hydroxyethyl)-3-methyl-1-benzofuran-2-carboxylate after heating with iodomethane for 8 days provided 0.22 g of ethyl 4-(1-methoxyethyl)-3-methyl-1-benzofuran-2-carboxylate. Yield: ˜100% m.p. 67-69° C.; MS: 263.2 (M+H)+.
