The above 4-ethoxycarbonylmethoxy-3-methyl-benzofuran-2-carboxylic acid tert-butyl ester was dissolved into a 40% TFA/methylene chloride solution, and stirred at room temperature for 4 hours. Evaporation of solvent gave 4-ethoxycarbonylmethoxy-3-methyl-benzofuran-2-carboxylic acid in quantitative yield.
